Bummer. Oh well, this is par for the course in rocket R+D. They’ll learn and fix whatever problem caused this malfunction.

I hope nobody was aboard!

Nobody hurt. The flat lid blew off of the squat, stage being tested. It wasn't a big ball of fire or anything like that.

The flat lid slowly deformed into a sort of hemisphere - then *pop* off it flew.

See? This is the nice thing when it's a private capitalist consortium failure. Which leads me to a proposal for a discussion here. We should, if we get the energy, or interest of focusing not merely on Capitalism v Socialism, but what is a modern, post 19th century phenomena.

Being, that government (socialism) is co-opted by the biggest capitalist orgs, and thus becomes, Crony Capitalism. This is how things are run today, and they pay campaign donations or work for lobbyists of these companies (lawyers), or work on posts on their Boards of Directors, post their political careers.

I formulate that our biggest differences are not cap v soc; but instead, are rich versus middle class (not poor). The poor are kept by the super rich to keep them inactive. It the middle class who are now targeted, I propose.

Prove Me Wrong via examples...

Spud! Lordy! Yes, we have corruption here and in all countries as far as we can tell.

Capitalism has been in hand long before the word was created, and the Commies in the USSR had Black Market capitalism for most of their existance, as far as it's able to see through the haze.

Its people looking for each persons "main chance." Not all have that itch. Many do, most don't, in my humble opinion.

We've had the best run of a really large nation.

Some small ones are doing it great, too - but each under our defensive umbrella, and economic situation since WW II, the world financial stability pretty much.

Such as Singapore and Switzerland.

The Socialists everywhere have screwed the pooch royally each time. Let this guy tell it:

Splendid video Doc, now what happens when the Elites purchase obedience from politicians via cash payments. This would be the crux of this discussion and not the desirability of socialism, but rather, what happens to the middle class when the rich purchase the services of all politicians, as is now done??

"What happens when it becomes a rigged system" (fair paraphrase)

Trump happens!

We are still working, here, whereas all the socialist experiments fail unless they convert, like the ChiComes and Socialist-run Indians did, to Capitalist economies.

Trump happened on the Rupub side, and we're still fighting off some Resisty Repubs in the Fed and State levels.

On the Dem side, a schism happens when the Democratic Socialists and Greens take enough young'uns to lose enough national seats, and then the wisest Dem elites compromise to bring the wayward lefties back in with the more corrupt left.

So far, the Dems have seen the future and are worried about their chances. They've given the Proggies some ground, and accept socialist Bernies BernieCare.

And so much more madness! And now impeachement! But the Proggy youts are not pacified. Throw tidbits to a pack of hungry hounds, and don't expect them to start to behave nice.

The Dem elite and their donors are despairing. They know that the House has roughly 20 seats that are heavily Trump voting Districts. The lefty policies being debated and the impeachment are making all of those seats look lost.

Thus the few oddball entrants into the field. That loopy hippy chic, Bloomberg, a few out-of-date Centrist Dem Governors or Senators who we all forget.

Sorry, Dems - Bernie and Pocahontas are your big likeliest - unless you're a fan of the Walking Dead, i.e., ol' Joe.

So after this loss, both the White House and the House of Reps, and maybe even a Senate Seat or two - they'll try to fix themselves.

But can they? Can it be - they may be like the old French Aristos - unable to see just how bad it is.

>We are still working, here, whereas all the socialist experiments fail unless they convert, like the ChiComes and Socialist-run Indians did, to Capitalist economies.<

But don’t capitalist economies also fail? In fact one could say that soon after capitalism really starts to believe in its own immortality, it (or more precisely, the financial side of capitalism) simply explodes and threatens to bring the entire economic system down. Because, if capitalism (or anyway financial capitalism) is forever then there is really no such thing as wreckless borrowing. After all, if capitaliism is forever, you can always roll over short-term debt, borrow more, find a greater sucker to pass toxic assets onto. Maybe this is the explanation for why history’s most notorious and damaging bubbles originated in countries and times with the soundest economies. The book ‘This Time Is Different’, takes a quantitative look at the market crashes that have occurred in the last few centuries, showing how prior to each one there was confidence that the problems of competition and selfish behaviour had finally been solved and the system would remain in a self-correcting state forever.

When it turns out yet again that this time is not different and that, actually, wreckless borrowing is about to bring everything crashing down, we get socialism for the rich with massive bailouts followed by austerity fostered on those who lack the wealth and power to rig political systems in their favour.

So don’t tell me that socialism always fails whereas capitalism runs along just fine. Aspects of capitalism work very well (typically where there is true competition powered by genuine choice) but other aspects of it are incredibly detrimental.

They surely had black markets but are you quite sure there was capitalism? It is part of the mythology of capitalism to insist that it is synonymous with markets but any anthropologist can tell you that, actually, markets and capitalism are not one and the same. For example, when Europe was in its Dark Ages, Islamic countries had bazaars running the closest thing ever seen to free market economics but nothing like capitalism took off. This was probably because Islamic laws against usury ensured laissez faire remained in place. Capitalism is all about increasing profits and the competitive ethos only gets you so far. Cartels, monopolies and rigged markets favouring you (or disfavouring your competitors) are what bring in the really big profits, which is why big business spends so much on lobbying. In practice capitalism is anti-free market but they like to speak as though they believe in it because it sounds meritocritous to claim you gained through fair competition rather than rent-seeking.

So, to get back to my question, are you sure that there was capitalism in the USSR and not just black markets?

Weird ideas, or a straw man or two? Lets see.

"Wreckless" borrowing seems to be something horrific! I can't wait till we get to "Wreckless lending." And an economic model that goes to infinity? When we cover that, I'll be surprised if anyone claims that.

Don't tell you that socialism always fails? It doesn't always fail to get into power. It does always fail if it gets as much power over a country that its designed to grab. We have no example of a case where one has succeeded. Please provide it, if ye can, lassie.

Yes, for sure, capitalist economies fail every generation. We use the term "fail" to mean they stall out for some time before restarting.

The contrast, as I think you know, is that those nasty socialist ones dig deep and really grind down and hurt a country in a specially, really especially nasty way.

But like a strong meth addiction, even after fighting hard to get "cleaned up,"some countries fall right back into it!

You concede what most know, that the USSR had black markets. You then get rolling; even if they had black marketeering: "...are you quite sure there was capitalism?"

Uh - yeah, quite sure. In a State where one truly risked all if one broke any Commie rule, such as black marketeering, one had to be quite deadly serious about it.

Much like the gangsters during our US Prohibition era, they had to know profits and losses to a "t," and were ready to bet their lives on a given deal.

Yeah, that's capitalism I see!

And you think that under Islamic rules that rule out interest one has totally free trade? Becausee you says so - thats what laissez faire is intended to mean.

The Bazaars did a fine trade in many things, including approximately a million Euro slaves during the Muslim "Golden Era." That was capitalism, too. Yet you think they were "nothing like capitalism."

Yes, they were. They were capitalism without using interest, and following any other particular strictures.

Just as we do today! They'd engage in cartel actions we cant, for instance - not legally. Who knows what they did illegally?

Venetian Capitalists got what we still call Arabic Numerals and the assosciated math from Arab traders - fellow capitalists. Them Arabs had gotten that math and them numbers from Indian Capitalists.

From them, and back in time to the Romans, the Greeks, the Phoenicians, and more - merchants are capitalists. Good ones and bad ones.

Our modern kind is seen by many in contrast to Socialism, and its horrid subgroup, Communism.

That's just one way to view it. Its just trading! Done with currency, say e-currency on a smartphone. Or haggling between a guy with a herd of camels and guy with a pile of nice carpets.

Each lookin' for the main chance!

A ghostly Adam Smith smiles down on all who would trade, rolling up his sleeve, cracking the knuckles on his invisible hands....
