Re: Employees Will Need Reskilling As AI Takes Jobs
Blimey that robot in your illustration looks scary!
You know, there was a video uploaded to YouTube by the Slow Mo Guys that sums up what the future is going to be like. In this particular video, one of the duo is dressed as a waiter and is holding a tray of drinks. He is standing on one of those exercise machines, the kind with a conveyer belt so you can walk, jog, run or sprint on the spot depending on how fast the belt is travelling. As the belt speeds up he has to run faster in order to keep up, but inevitably it becomes too fast and he goes flying off the end and into a swimming pool.
Now imagine such a conveyer belt with not just waiters running on the spot but every job that does or could exist. Imagine that it’s not a swimming pool but a garbage heap that you fall into if you cannot keep up. The machine is speeding up all the time and people can see that there are those who cannot cope with the pace. But they are told this need not be a problem because you can just train yourself to run a bit faster. But the conveyer belt keeps speeding up and there is a limit to how fast people can go so unless somebody comes up with a solution other than ‘run faster’ it is an ejection into the garbage heap for those who can’t buy their way off.

Re: Employees Will Need Reskilling As AI Takes Jobs
Reskilling is hard when folks are already barely getting by. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - We're going to need a subsidized job training program for the worst off among us. A cashier at wal-mart can't spend 6 months training to be a A/C repair technician without a paycheck. Every dollar spent training people for jobs that are actually in demand will be returned 10 times over in terms of the economic value created. Ditch welfare for able bodied, working age adults and replace it with a job training and placement program and we would unlock the potential of the American worker.

--- Account closed permanently. I won't stand for abuse of authority by forum administration to censor criticism of a conservative radio host that celebrated the death of AIDS patients on his show. Maybe some day we'll speak again elsewhere.

I agree that retraining is not the answer. The available jobs will become increasingly technical until only a handful of people can do them. We need to create an ownership society:

Re: Employees Will Need Reskilling As AI Takes Jobs
When voters are being put out of work in droves, only candidates that promise some kind of real solution will have a chance of winning. Unfortunately, the solution most of them propose will be Venezuelazation. With so many resources, we can probably survive that paradigm until people wake up and realize there is a better way.

Spiko, have you ever read Marshall Brain’s Novella Manna? I would be interested to know the extent to which his ‘Australia Project’ is similar to your seed loans.

I have not read it, but the first paragraphs have me intrigued. We shall see:

Re: Employees Will Need Reskilling As AI Takes Jobs
The story is in two halves. The first half is a dystopian tale in which the the pursuit of profit to the exclusion of other social concerns coupled with the extension of current welfare programs leads to unemployable people being housed in prefab structures built on wasteland. To make the book even shorter for you, you can skip all that and instead read the second half which is all about a new country that makes the most of technical efficiency to being abundance to everyone, using the shareholder model (suitably tweaked to prevent any one person or group monopolising it).

Re: Employees Will Need Reskilling As AI Takes Jobs
Everyone thinks automation is the future.
But what happens if people get tired of identical, cheap products from Communist slaves or mindless robots?
I say there will be a revival of hand-made products. The rich will never want furniture made by machines. And if society prospers everyone will be rich.
Millions could be put to work making dovetailed drawers.
