Depending on Information content and its organization, Yes.

Obviously they are, otherwise they would not be copies.

It's not so simple for me. I want to say yes, but then consider the many variation types of people you could electronically "sculpt" from a copy of someone.

Then the new, me, you, or whoever is as real as me.

Copies of me would be legally prohibited from my ID, but would still be problematic as they are copies of me.

Would the law make copies alter if the original demanded it?

Stuff to work out. And I agree about the urge to approve - I just wonder about it.

I guess we better work it out now!

Variations sculpted from people would hardly be a copy of anyone. Would such a sculpture behave indistinguishably from any normal person? If so, the label of ‘person’ equally applies.

Black mirror poses these short plays to millions of people who dont read sci fi or fantasy, just as Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, and a few less known sci-fi / fantasy "short" shows offered years ago.

The ideas have rolled around for many decades in sci fi and fantasy. It will be really interesting to see how it goes.

I suspect it will be analogous to when the Brit Empire pushed human rights for slaves. Fairly well known today that they outlawed first their own slavery, then anyones' cross-Atlantic Slave trade, then the idea spread slowly all over the then "Western World."

Before we get there, we may have a period where we deal first with "upgraded" and "uplifted" animals.

Also average or below average people who pioneer robots in ways "mechanical men" still not quite can.

The people obviously will keep their rights. Some countries will grant the uplifted animals a near-human or human equal level quickly.

I think that a "perfect" digital copy of oneself would be the same as continuing one's own life. So yes, digital copies would be people. The prospect of creating digital hells has always scared the !@#$ out of me :)

Even if 10 instances of me would be created and put in paradise, its not worth it if one is put in hell. Who knows, one day one might wake up and be that instance...

So I think it will pass on having my brain copied for digital uploading. Eternity of nothingsness sounds better.

If Hugh everett's many world's theory is correct we have no choice anyway.

What would it take to create a perfect copy of somebody? Arguably, it would not be enough to construct an atomically-precise replica. This is because, if we want to have a PERFECT copy, there must be absolutely nothing to distinguish between original and replica, and there still is something to distinguish between the two in this example. That something is the fact that you, and only you, can occupy the particular position in space that you happen to be in at any time. To be assured that we have created the perfect copy, we would want an atomically-precise replica to occupy the exact same Cartesian coordinates that you happen to occupy, which can only be achieved by replacing you atom by atom. That, obviously, would be a replacement not a copy. All copies would achieve is other people, very much like yourself though probably diverging somewhat as novel experiences have their effect.

Extropia, is that not a positive argument in favor of Quantum archaeology? Triangulation of a 4D coordinates field we can discover all past locations of peoples and revival them in new coordinate systems where they continue to live life much like healing burns or broken bones. The computations may seem huge but maths and quantum computers can help out because remember we can eliminate impossible computations with them and focus in on the most likely probabilistic occurrences. We just need to map out everything on earth and calculate coordinates triangulations.

Seem plausible?
