MindX Matters

A Message to the Moderators: Restructure, Repurpose With Steemit

Spike has been trying to change the philosophy of this board to conform to his wishes. That's inappropriate. NewsFlash was intended for news and partisan politics and MindX was meant to be a forum for general topics, not just science and tech.

From the OP of the above linked thread:

quote:

Elements of MindX . . .

Here were the elements that made Golden MindX so great (James Jaeger can chime in on this):

1) Dogpile. Everything was in one forum, and the latest post on any thread was pushed to the top. That is genius. It’s fine to have a few, seldom used subforums, but there should be one main forum for most comments (call it “MindX”).

Here's how I summarized it on page 6:

Lobby
NewsFlash (or not -- for just links and partisan politics)
MindX (our nod to RayK and the principal forum)
Steemit
Foundation and Bureaucracy
Netherworld

I dropped the ball on Steemit. It's a great idea, but as it turned out I wasn't willing to put in the work it would have required. My apologies.

Lobby, F&B and Netherworld were envisioned to be seldom used, and that has turned out to be pretty much true, although I'm somewhat surprised that Netherworld has turned out to be as good as it is (off-color but not too gross).

Newsflash has worked great. Everyone seems to get it.

The major issue is that Spike considers MindX to be a pristine place for sci, tech and sci-fi. That was not what we voted for and his misunderstanding of what MindX is has ruined a number of my threads. His actions have become a form of censorship, essentially a heckler's veto.

MindX is a general forum. If someone doesn't know where to put something, it belongs in MindX. The MindX forum we voted on was for any topic under the sun. It is intended to replicate the old MindX, where there was only one forum for all topics.

We created Netherworld and Newsflash to tamp down the weaknesses of old MindX, and it has worked admirably well.

The old MindX format created problems with people complaining about off-topic posts as a tool to censor. Spike is doing the same thing here and it should stop now.

Re: MindX Matters

My rule of thumb, though I only recently crystalized it, is this:

Newsflash: topics that would most likely be found in Newsweek or National Review or that just do not fit anywhere else. Newsflash is our default off-topic section.

MindX: topics that would likely be found in Scientific American, Popular Science, or Analog.

Lobby: where new people can introduce themselves and be welcomed by members.

Bureaucracy: a place to raise issues or propose changes regarding the forum.

Netherworld: topics that would likely be found in Penthouse, Daily Stormer or some analog of those, or that are toxic or have become toxic.

This could change, but I consider these interpretations to be consistent with the descriptions in the Forum Layout, so any change would require the usual vote.

Recall the requirements for a change to the forum:

quote:

19. Forum Modification: Anything about the forum can be changed (where feasible) if 3/4 of the moderators agree to exact changes. Forum Administration will not undertake heroic measures to make expensive or technically difficult changes. Administration may make minor edits to the forum to increase consistency or clarity after posting their intent in the Foundation & Bureaucracy section and waiting 24 hours for members and moderators to make objections. If any moderators object, the issue must be handled in the official manner.

quote:

16. Moderator Votes: In all moderator votes, an unambiguous motion must be stated in the Foundation & Bureaucracy subforum with at least the first sentence in the forum’s “BIG” font in the form “Motion: that…” For example:

Motion: that one new subforum be added between Shambhala and 24-Hour News Cycle called Steemit.

Then, a vote must be called for and seconded. The vote can be called for or seconded, but not both, by the same moderator who posted the motion. (Some specific votes require an additional third.) The motion, the call for a vote, and the second can be made anywhere in the same thread, but it must be clear which motion is being referred to when a vote is called for and seconded. Once a vote has been called for and seconded, it will be initiated. No other motions can be made in that thread, except to extend voting time, until the vote has concluded. When a vote has been appropriately initiated, the vote will conclude 24 hours later. A vote can be extended exactly 12 hours if a moderator declares, “I call for a 12 hour vote extension.” Each moderator is entitled to only one call for a 12 hour vote extension on a specific motion. Votes can be changed one time, either reversed or retracted, while voting is still in progress. Forum administration will determine, possibly retroactively, when the voting period has expired. All moderator votes require at least 3 affirmative votes to be valid. By the end of the voting period, moderators must vote with an unambiguous “yea” or “nay”. Voting will not be done with the forum’s voting mechanism. When there is a tie, the decision will be made by forum administration.

I suspect that Red wishes to think of this forum as a general intellectual forum, but I have always viewed it as a futurist forum. However, I could have misunderstood the intent of the other members. I welcome this discussion, but I will only change policy with a 3/4 vote in the affirmative.

Keep in mind that I do not moderate except in emergencies. I only make a post saying that a particular topic should be moved. If there is no discussion of my post, I will leave it at that. I only respond if someone directly addresses the post.

Red, if you wish to propose a motion, I suggest that it be in the form of a revised description of the Forum Layout:

Forum Layout

If you create tight definitions of the subforums for the Forum Layout, and those definitions are approved, I will follow those definitions.
