Spud,

Thanks for the glimpse into the past.

As reinforcing tradition was one of my jobs, I had read many details of the old sailing days, and taught only a few.

This brought back such memories.

Har! Belay, that command. For me, it reminded me of Spain Wilson's Perverted Pirate comics from the 1960 and 70's.

Thanks for that slide into the crumby world of Crumb himself - http://www.tcj.com/reviews/the-complete-zap-comix/

And if not for that post prompting this reply, I would not have looked for the documentary that I saw some time ago which I really liked. Here it is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPEY58kDU2M

"It is a lesson oft repeated...that women shall never learn."

Lordy! That opens so many doors! One that hits me concerns many classrooms overwhelmingly more led by women than men.

And in the US this is a widely supported idea: "...teaching is hard - our teachers are underpaid and deserve more and more."

That is so, so wrong.

I was a certified "Navy Instructor / Trainer" after a two-three week school. Most of the class time was recorded teaching practice, which was very useful in overcoming the hurdle of public speaking and managing a tight teaching time window.

The rest was understanding the standard format teaching plan, roughly similar across the country and our military.

I found myself being told I was as good or better than some of their teachers when I did community assist visits at schools over the years.

Not because I am some charismatic whiz. Its just that it does not take that. Some teachers are on a "gravy train" of just doing enough to not get fired, en route to a lifetime benefits/pension package.

We could go a LOT cheaper and get better overall teaching. No exaggeration at all.
