Re: OMG, they're turning Jean-Luc Picard into a SJW! Frakes is directing some of the episodes. He's said a few times that he thought the androgynous species (the J'naii), one of whom Riker falls in love with, should have been represented by male actors rather than females.
So Riker would've fallen for a male-esque character, played by a male. Which is okay I guess, but it would've defined the character Riker as bisexual.
He was kinda pandering, but it shows his mindset, and what he's willing to see changed. (and we've already seen how the writers feel)
It's argued by some, that not being receptive to same sex attraction, is a social construct that most of us subconsciously adhere to, and that in a perfect setting like TNG, it would've been natural for Riker.
I think I disagree with that. I'm sure there'd be more bi people without social pressures, but I don't think people are that malleable.
If people want to debate that without the supposed straight-male-bias, they could find definitively gay and lesbian people.. and debate whether the way they feel, is a social construct or not.
I think many of them'd cop the same kind of attitude as their straight counterparts.

Not sure about that potential Mary Sue character though.. Hopefully she doesn't wind up being the real main character. (I completely expected an overshadowing female lead)
He mentions Data as he pulls open a drawer with a damaged Android. I always wondered if they could recover his damaged head from the explosion at the end of Nemesis, and then repair him from there. (that explosion looked pretty destructive though)
He uploaded his "data" into B-4 before he died, and supposedly, Data's identity gradually re-emerges from that... But, as a human, I'm not sure I'd consider that the actual Data, without more physical continuity.
