Libre not Libra: The Future Of Money
Libra, as you may well know, is the cryptocurrency that Facebook intends to launch at some point in the future.
In this video, it is argued that the launch of libra will herald a new phase in the history of money. There will be three competing monetary systems; Government-Money (in the form of fiat currencies like the dollar) The People’s Money (in the form of public blockchains and other DLTs such as bitcoin) and corporate currencies like libre.
Supposing corporate currency ends up the dominant currency (the lecturer in the video thinks its possible that Silicon Valley could seriously threaten the institutions behind fiat currency if it had a mind to) what kind of world would we end up with? Since ‘Libre’ means freedom, the title of this talk could be ‘freedom, not Libra’. In other words, the speaker believes corporate currencies could endanger our liberty.

Ex, now think of FB being broken up by the President. Think that antitrust action has been undertaken by Orange Guy? Censorship rulings by some court? How would this affect confidence in this currency made of pure electron flow?
