Re: Defense Department to ban beer and pizza? Mandatory keto diet may enhance military performance

Doc, do you mean HDL spikes? I have total cholesterol of just under 200, but my HDL is off the charts and LDL is normal.

I hope the Dr. didn't talk you into statin drugs.

How's the keto going for you?

My congrats to you on that fantastic HDL!

My HDL is fine, well within normal range. I dropped almost all exercise except leisurely walks after I started taking care of my Mom after I retired.

Before that, I was in very good shape. Regular gym time, lots of road-work.

Sudden stop after retirement.

For a bit over five years. Now on my own, and was easing back into workout, and then sidelined by some leg issues.

The LDL is normal for you, and I'm glad. I've read of it spiking in one or two articles or blogs, and accept it. Knowing that it may come back down makes me feel better.

I drink a half-gallon of whole milk a day, six pats of butter in making six eggs a day. A bunch of peanuts and pecans between the eggs.

...EDIT...added 9 Nov, 10:15PM..............

I also get five fruits in that window: grapes, 3 apples, and blueberries.

I do that within a five to six hour window, closer to five.

Lots of water all day, and vitamin and mineral supplementation.

That's an instinctive keto for me. No menu from any site or book -yet. I may do that sometime.

My understanding is that LDL can spike on keto, but the traditional way of looking at LDL is a bit flawed. Apparently the actual amount of LDL is much less important than the ratio of LDL to HDL or somesuch. I haven't researched this independently, but folks on online communities seem to think increased LDL isn't inherently a problem.

I haven't done any blood tests since starting keto, but my numbers were all good prior to starting.

I was never a lab tech, but as I posted earlier, me no worried.

Even though my LDL almost doubled from where it was last year.

I'm going to go and do some searching in a while to find out more about the LDL thing, but not out of worry.

I just know that I learn much better when I try due to some genuine interest. So I shall trike while the iron is hot!

Red,

I added an edit to the diet I posted.

Thanks about the Statin warning. The Doctor didn't advise that - the number is only just above the normal limits.

I've gotten the statin warning already from some vids I've seen, and plan to avoid them.

Doc, I just had a visit with my Doctor who screwed up the timing of my blood test. He had the results but they still aren't posted. However, I gleaned a couple things.

My blood tests were great. Total cholesterol was 180. Don't remember the LDL except that it was normal. However, my HDL got a high (flagged) rating (>60). I questioned it, and he said that the HDL was great. The higher the better. Don't know why the lab flags high HDL as abnormal. Guess they don't know what a keto diet looks like.

Triglycerides were through the floor, as usual.

That is great to hear! I still haven't had blood work done since starting keto (still going strong!) but I'll be sure to post about it when I get it done next.
