Defense Department to ban beer and pizza? Mandatory keto diet may enhance military performance

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2019/07/01/defense-department-to-ban-beer-and-pizza-mandatory-keto-diet-may-enhance-military-performance/

quote:

The controversial ketogenic or “keto” diet may be the future of the military, some defense officials say.

Service members, and Navy SEALS especially, may have to forgo beer and burritos for skinny cocktails and avocado salad (forget the tortilla chips) if a proposal from Special Operations Command gains momentum.

Not sure I like that service members may be forced into a keto diet, but it says a lot about the diet’s health benefits if the military is even discussing switching everyone to Keto diets.

At least during peace-time, they should just have minimum standards that people need to meet. If you can do that, while eating burritos and pizza from time to time, then so be it. imho

Plus, our military is voluntary. (for now)
No need to make things uncomfortable for some people, by cutting out their potential comfort foods.

Here's the frustrating thing about this: You can make a facsimile of any sort of food low carb. That includes pizza burritos and ice cream. Pizza you just have to fudge with the crust. Burritos same thing for the wrap and substitute for the beans. Rebel Ice Cream is a commercially available low carb snack.

I eat this sort of stuff daily. The last night I had Gen. Tso's chicken. I used standard sauce, but it would be easy to make the sauce low carb. Used Carbquik for the breading. It was fabulous.

Tonight it's deep fat fried walleye with breading. Again carbquik for the batter. Had it last week and it was perfect.

Haven't made pizza in a while but I've got a couple recipes. Hunt makes a no sugar added pasta sauce and Walmart's house brand pizza sauce is low carb.

I don't eat pastries, but I suppose you could do it. Chocolate desserts and cheese cake can be adapted to Keto.

Yeah, absolutely. I recently got a keto pizza delivered from a place called Blaze Pizza. I believe they're a national brand. It 100% scratched my pizza itch. To be fair, the crust wasn't as good as a regular pizza's crust, but the crust is the least interesting part of pizza. Fair trade off though, because I'm down 56 pounds on keto and it's been so easy that it feels like cheating.

Apparently Aldi has a 0 net carb bread, but I haven't been able to find it locally.

Edit: Had a Jimmy John's "Unwich" tonight, which was just their regular sandwiches wrapped in lettuce. It was delicious.

56 lbs in a few months? (!) Wholly mackerel. Way to go.

How much more are you shooting for.

Thanks =) I don't really have any particular goal, but I'd like to lose another 30 or 40. It has been surprisingly easy, and several family members have started keto as well.

I won't say I never have cravings for carby things (I saw a warm chocolate chip cookie the other day and I started drooling...), but it is much easier to resist now than it would have been in the past.

I'm in the ex-burbs and no delivery but there is a Blaze within 7 miles. I'll try them tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

Keep on keeping on proselytizing. Can only result in more options for us.

You may want to call ahead, because I'm not sure if every location has the keto crust. It is fairly new.

The OP article is very surprising. We who are interested in Keto and who are doing it know that LDL's will spike.

I flipped less than a year ago to Keto from a very low animal protein diet for many years.

I use my VA doctor for annual physicals, and my WBC spike surprised him, so I described my new diet. He had the old on on record for years. That explained the LDL's.

He gave me the obligatory short spiel about diet that the AMA has used for so long, and I thanked him, and we moved on.

I can deal with that, and he's used to patients who ignore dietary advice - but the Military Docs accepting this surprises me.

I'll be looking, and trying to find out how they're responding to this.

My hope is that they have some study or two that explains in a way that regular doctors accept, that we have to accept this new way of looking at saturated fat.
