Re: Google rewards reputable reporting, not left-wing politics

This is one of those studies that defies common sense to the point of being irrelevant. All you have to do is look at the Google news page any moment of any day. Here is a snapshot I took a while back to make a similar point:

Sure, we can pretend that up is down and black is white. Google is prejudiced. They are undoubtedly clever about how they execute their prejudice, but there is not doubt that they are.

I'm beginning to suspect that none of you actually read the article, because it's methods and data are quite robust. Seems you can't actually criticize the study, so instead you're just going to ignore it outright because it conflicts with your pre-existing narrative. Confirmation bias in it's most obvious form.

Apparently they're so clever that they show no statistical evidence of bias according to The Economist.

Yah, Sure.

Try and guess how much I care if you believe me or not. Go on, guess.

Account closed permanently. I won't stand for abuse of authority by forum administration to censor criticism of a conservative radio host that celebrated the death of AIDS patients on his show. Maybe some day we'll speak again elsewhere.

Try and guess how much I care about this study.

It would be easy for a clever person to present statistically similar news items that have an entirely different purport. Google has a lot of clever people and a lot of clever algorithms...evil, but clever.

What does this even mean? Can you rephrase it, because I’m not following.

"On D-Day, 156,000 brave Allied troops began the liberation of France."

"On D-Day, 9000 German soldiers defending their homeland were slaughtered by an Allied invasion."

Professionals can do this much better. I haven't had much practice. I teach math, not subterfuge.

This isn't really relevant to the study in question. Google doesn't change headlines in the news search results and the study was about which sources got placed in the search results. It wasn't about the content of the articles or their headlines. Their data showed that a neutral prediction model accurately reflected the share of results from different sources. If Google was censoring results from right wing sources then the real data they gathered should have shown right leaning news outlets getting a disproportionately low share of results. In fact, they found that Fox News's results even beat the prediction from their model.

It would be easy to take only those results that reflect a certain view spread across nearly all news sites. I could use article from Fox News all day long to create a liberal impression if I only used examples from Shepard Smith. The one day that Tucker Carlson agreed with Elizabeth Warren on something, Google was all over it.

Also, the ability to mislead with stats was so, so clearly understood and widely known decades ago that the phrase "lies, dam* lies, and statistics" referring to an increasing level of worse lies was part of common parlance.

Today, the drop of general awareness broadly by most literate members of society has dropped to the degree that a smart fellow like lucid isn't aware of this rhetorical use of stats.

Such that when Spike offered it casually - he didn't grasp it.

Yowee!

Well, on to looking for that old vid - if those "eager-to-unperson-the-inconvenient" Lefties-on-line haven't "disappeared" that inconvenient leak from Google by this point.

So far we have a repeatable study with published methods and data versus subjective gut feelings and assumptions. Call me when you have more than that and I might start believing your conspiracy theory. If the “problem” is as widespread as you say then a reputable outlet should be able to find compelling statistical evidence with a well designed study.

And yet, all I have to do is click over to Google Headlines, and there it is again:

I have read countless "repeatable" studies that clearly showed liberal bias in the news. This latest deception is wasted on me.
