Near Future (Common) Luxury
In the ring stations that will be built after we establish self-replicating systems and space-based in situ manufacturing, it will be simple for everyone who is so inclined to live in optimal luxury.
The interiors of their homes may look like this:
This is apparently a real interior, but it has probably been enhanced graphically. Note the inner glow of the newel posts and the vase. This could be done, but it would be difficult and expensive with current technology. With the lighting that will be available post-singularity, this kind of added touch will be easy and inexpensive. The plants may or may not be real. If they are real, they will be perfectly healthy and unblemished. If they are not real, they will be indistinguishable from the real thing and virtually indestructible. Automatons will continually maintain the plants so that they always look pristine.
When people step out of their front door, they may see this:
Perfect beaches like this will be continually cleaned and combed by automatons that will be as common and inexpensive as Dollar Tree personal calculators. The perfect sky will actually be an illusion generated by the kinds of projectors that are currently being developed for stealth aircraft. It will be indistinguishable from a comparable sky on earth, but possibly a tad "prettier" owing to the artificial lighting.
These things will not be illusions. It will be simple for every living person to live on an estate so large and so fantastic that almost no one alive today could possibly afford it.
My guess is that when given access to such astonishing luxury, people will opt to live in other ways, but this option will be available to them.
It will even be possible to live like this in giant starliners on their way to distant solar systems. If one is going to travel, one may as well travel in luxury.

Re: Near Future (Common) Luxury
Sounds lovely. And all very achievable with the right technology and change in societal attitudes.

Re: Near Future (Common) Luxury
Attitudes are indeed changing, but they won't need to change much. Self-replicating technology will make it so cheap to build things like this that competition will make them available.
If two or more entrepreneurs are busy building ring stations, the one that offers the most real estate for the least money will get the customers. Since offering more real estate will merely require more time, these stations will get bigger and more elaborate on a daily basis.
Also, there will be an advantage to filling them up. People may want a lot to themselves, but they will still want neighbors. They will still want to be able to go where there is a crowd. Facebook only works because a lot of people are on it. The same will be true of space colonies. The pressure to recruit will be enormous.
Also, as I have noted before, there will be an urge to build empires. Elon Musk is not going to Mars just to make money. He wants the first Martian city to be named after him.

Yes - consider this "remodel" and renaming.
Mons Olympus becomes Mons Elon.
A great head of Elon, visible from far, far away.
Elon may well tweet - "which of these expressions should I use for Mons Elon?" along with a few pic choices.

For me, the most powerful tech on 60's Star Trek, was not FTL, nor teleporters, or phasers, but, The Replicator. Poof! Poverty eliminated in 3 seconds.

Re: Near Future (Common) Luxury
For me, the most powerful technology feasible, and much more plausible than FTL, teleporters, phasers, or replicators, is the one that has never been depicted in Star Trek, Star Wars or any popular science fiction: self-replicating robotic industry. On the day we can turn loose an army of self-sufficient robots that, working as a team, can ultimately replicate themselves, everyone will suddenly be filthy rich.
