Re: This Is what You get: Impossible Dream

I can imagine how this might evolve greater prosperity overall. If we take ‘resources’ to mean the stuff from which the Earth is made, then one can imagine how a market could result in ever-more efficient use of those material resources. The consequence of this would be something Buckminster Fuller called ‘ephemeralisation’. You can see ephemeralisation at work in things like smartphones. Thanks to technological innovation, an iPhone that easily fits into one’s pocket contains the sort of storage and processing power that would have required a truck for transportation just a few decades ago.

However, in reality material resources are not the only thing waiting to be used. There are also more intangible resources that exist within human minds and these too can be exploited. Given that these are sometimes less than positive aspects of human nature (such as stupidity or greed) it is possible not only for inventors and engineers to get rich by making ever-better products, but also for people to get rich by preying on the negative aspects of human psychology. Every financial crisis could be taken as proof that sometimes, sadly, the desire to get rich by exploiting human weaknesses out-competes the more noble aspects of capitalism, that which seeks to sell goods and services that appeal to the best in us.
