The writer is a true futurist and his ideas are familiar with variations. Evolutionary and that is good.

This is something I've thought about quite a bit. If it were possible to run a civilization's simulation faster than real time then you could, for example, generate and simulate an entire universe whose purpose for existence is to produce new works of art for the "real world". New films, games, literature, etc. Perhaps that is the natural evolution of procedurally generated content.

It cannot be this one then, because you have a big waste of space. It'd look like the Star Trek galaxy, with loads of humanoids, each have different cultures, and funny foreheads, making entertainments for the Top Universe.

Not necessarily. If you wanted to speed up a civilization then you'd probably cut down on the extraneous details. You don't need to simulate an entire galaxy, just make it appear to exist to the people in the civilization you're simulating. Empty space is easy to calculate, and a speed of light that ensures you can't really explore the galaxy, let alone the universe, in one lifetime would keep the problem space small. Simulating one civilization would be twice as fast as simulating two of them.

Additionally, If you wanted to generate new films or literature that were relateable to the people running the simulations then you'd probably start the simulation in a state that will lead to a similar culture. Maybe the simulation begins in the 1920s and is then sped up to get 2018-equivalent media.

It's a seductive idea, as so many tech possibilities that are truly possible are.

For us, we would strip away as much as possible in doing this in simulations.

An ASI? They might - might - strip away some things, but would probably be able to model very complex versions of the future society/societies the Solar System holds when we get to ASI level.

To our persception, the ASI says:

"Gents, please stop. Thats not what you should do. You want to do (this, that, the other). Thousands of almost totally identical versions of your reality have been run with that idea, and to do what you are planning works out very badly.

Allow me to transfer the details to your old AGI - the one that runs Earth right now."

Mind you - thats almost immediately after we tell it to run some such simulations. Our second is its, oh, ten, thousand or million years.

I get a kick out of how much we will be able to do, and how much we will probably be able to augment our intelligence in many ways.
