The invisible hand annoys me

Im assumming this is you spike. Having "The invisible hand" as an adminstrator title is annoying. if someone left leaning had got in first with setting up a forum would you be happy they named themselves "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." - which i admit is not as snappy but is equally politically charged. I dont think you were trying to poke at the left, but you are.

Re: The invisible hand annoys me

Of all the things that occurred to me might bother someone, that one never crossed my mind.

It is not a homage to Adam Smith. It is intended to emphasize that the Administrator wishes to be as invisible as possible.

However, if this works the way I have planned, you will never see TheInvisibleHand unless you go looking for him. Once all the moderators are appointed, that name should almost never come up.

There is actually a way I could change that. It would require that I create a new identity, hand over the rights as Administrator to the new identity, and resign as Administrator. If a majority of moderators vote for me to do that, I will do it.

To be honest i totally understand that you were not trying to be political with that name. if theinvisiblehand is just there for the initial start up of this forum it would be silly to be upset by it. I disagree with alot of things you have to say spike but i think you're trying to be non-partisan. I hope the moderation can be equally balance. Im a little concerned that RedQ is a moderator - but perhaps itll be fine.

Red is actually a better person than I am. He will seem very different on a site where he cannot be persecuted.

The irony is you were trying to make a point of presenting an impression of an impartial adminstrator - but you chose an expression that is beloved by the right. Pretty funny and daft.

Nevermind about that. Are you still having trouble loading an avatar? Have you tried my instructions?

Forsooth, in truth! Smith writes as a Moral Philosopher of his time, sounding hugely religious and moral.

His "hand" analogy is very moralistically described, caring for all in his writing.

I'm a junior senior citizen, a lifelong Catholic, and never heard a Priest talk as moralistically as he writes in that "oldy talk tome" he is so famous for.

The modern swing and sway of belief tags that with very educated guys like you, Prof, but I think few others would notice it.

And now an educated guy like you has this edge on others who dont realise that Smith was being real moral, and considerate of all, much more so than todays kinda "cut-throat" free marketers.

Re: The Invisible Hand as a concept

This presents a vid that holds a discussion of the phrase, its historicity, and Smith himself. It is titled: "Why Is The Wealth of Nations So Important? Adam Smith and Classical Economics (2010)"

Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOksHxsR_2w

I find the discussion as a whole interesting, but to narrow to consideration of that phrase, consider it in the original wording.

We can hear it read at these time-points in the video: From 8:39 – 9:23.

To phrase that in modern language: "A merchant who pursues his own business goals, by doing so ends up doing things that benefit society - most often inadvertantly. This can be thought of as a chain of beneficial events that proceed to happen as though...

An Invisible Hand....

arranged matters that way.

Additionally, and importantly to Smith, he felt that this unexpected and inadvertent good was very different than a planned Gov expenditure that some "genius" claims will result in a planned "societal good."

Thus – Thou shall not trust the businessman who asks for Gov money to do some business that "will help the country."

Thus Sprach der Schmidt! Ya!
