Thanks, rich.

I certainly enjoyed this variant of another hour from these two that I have seen before.

Or it's the same vid, and a failing memory is gifting me with enjoying the same "cherry pop" twice!

I am glad that I watched this other interview. It places Pinker solidly into a certain category of intellectual. He is obviously educated and well-informed, but he is locked into a time and a world view. He doesn't get religion, and I would never go to the trouble of trying to change his views in that respect.

If I could ask him any question, it would be, “Have you read the paper by Stephen Omohundro where he essentially proves that any sufficiently sophisticated AI will have a tendency to guard its utility function, resulting in the usual dangerous behavior?”

The Basic AI Drives

He points out that AI will be limited in its advancement by the ability to perform experiments. An AI stationed in the proper environment (perhaps a planetoid like Ceres) with the ability to manufacture at a rapid pace and even replicate itself, could perform a billion experiments at once and make a billion observations about each experiment. Then, it could correlate the results of those experiments at a fast pace, work out theories to fit them, and immediately set up new experiments. We think of experiments in terms of pouring liquids into vials and boiling them. For the AI I envision, the experiments would be like a part of its thinking processes. There would literally be no line between a thought, a simulation, and a physical experiment.

That's beautiful and scary at the same time.
