Google to end Pentagon AI Project

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-44341490

quote:

Google will not renew a contract to do artificial intelligence work for the US Pentagon, company sources say.

The decision follows strong opposition in the technology giant's workforce.

A number of Google employees resigned and thousands of others signed a protest petition against taking part in the Pentagon project, known as Maven.

They feared it was the first step towards using artificial intelligence for lethal purposes. There has been no official statement from Google.

According to company sources, top executive Diane Greene told staff on Friday there would be no follow-up after the current contract expired next March.

But Kate Conger, a journalist for the technology news website Gizmodo, told the BBC that Google had not cancelled Project Maven and did not appear to have ruled out future work with the military.

The contract is reported to be worth less than $10m (£7.5m) to Google but could potentially lead to more extensive cooperation with the Pentagon.

Dont be evil. except when russia and china have their best AI programmers working on military AI. Then you might want to be "evil".

Exactly. Don't they understand that this isn't going to halt research of A.I for military purposes? Unless there is an international moratorium, all this is going to do is put the U.S at a disadvantage.

"Do they see...."

You come right to the nub of their blindness.

The old quote applies perfectly here - I gotta paraphrase - "There are none so blind as those who will not see."

Just because it is inevitable doesn't mean that Google has to be involved. Like Disney cancelling Roseanne, this is an instance of a company responding to public outcry. The contracts must not have been profitable enough to offset the damage that it would do to their brand. Google knows that it hurts their bottom line if they end up associated with killer robots.

Account closed permanently. I won't stand for abuse of authority by forum administration to censor criticism of a conservative radio host that celebrated the death of AIDS patients on his show. Maybe some day we'll speak again elsewhere.

lucid,

"...this is an instance of a company responding to public outcry."

Possible. It's a toss up as to whether it is that, or that many of those at the top agree with the objections.

They may not want to alert the mass of investors in Alphabet that Alphabet and Google both are thick with PC SJW loons at the top, and so are not publicly expressing their "true feels."

The top woman who was noted was vague about future DOD contract plans, only saying they have no intention to renew the specific, current job they are still doing.

Repeat - still doing. They are still hard at that "big bad objectionable" current job of working for the US Defense Dept, and will be for a little while yet, until the contact runs out.

Consider the way they fired Damore, and how the explanation the Alphabet top kahuna issued about why it was done was explicitly dishonest in a very doctrinaire PC way.

From that, it seems to me they are mos def riding a very PC worldview.

So its either fear of, or agreement with that "Oh! Defense of the US! Ooooh!" feeling.
