This is what I am waiting for. In situ manufacturing of giant habitats. Space, here we come!

Nah. That would take something like, oh..

Say, some really fast development schedule.

Say like a log curve instead of the predictable, gut-check expected linear.

Oh wait - that Kurzinsky guy. Kurzsmith, something. Didn't he say something about that?

Yeah, baby. Once we develop self-replicating robotic systems, the sky will fill up with those things. The only thing that is required is that a robot be able to work in space and do the work we would otherwise do. Then, they can mine, build more robots, and get the program going.

We need fast spacecraft if humans are involved as colonists. But yeah the goodies are out there, in triplicate.

I don't think that is true. Robots can build giant wheel stations and send them our way. We can park them en masse at a stable Lagrange point. No one would have to be in space longer than a couple of weeks to get to one.

My point is we still have to fly there fast to get there. If you are thinking of asteroid conversion to space habitats close-by, then yeah, you can send bots to do all the work, then push the habitats here, then boost humans to earth or lunar orbit-whatever neighborhood you want people to live?

I was thinking of living in the Asteroid Belt. The reason is the same reason Willie Sulivan gave why he robbed banks? "Because that's where the money is."

With billions of peeps, more and more of them over time are going to be at developed nations levels.

While most will not even want to go to orbit, that still leaves a ton of peeps who can assess what goes into the trip, and will want those seats.

Same same for the "great out there."

To the many, thats a hard life to be avoided.

Instinctively "ewwe," except for a few. To those few, it'll seem cool.

Dangerous? Harsh, fast death included in the risk of such a thing?

OK, agreed. Even so, a tiny percentage of billions will still find that cool, and the more advanced tech of then means that we dont absolutely need anybody at all out there, probably.

But that same tech means that the large raw number that represents that teeny percentage of billions will be able to go.

Those who want to go will exist. They will exist way, way out there.

The Hohmann eliptical orbit to take a ship from earth to Ceres or back again takes about 1 year and 4 months:

Image

If we send a single self-replicating robotic system to Ceres, it could mine until it creates enough robots, stations and transports to begin evacuating earth en masse. It could send the stations to Lagrange points L4 and L5:

It could send the transports to earth. The earth transports would be nuclear powered with nuclear fuel secured in space and reaction mass secured on earth. They could land like the Musk ships:

They could take off again with a thousand occupants.

15 years after the project starts, we could all be living in space.

Fast-fast-fast!
We get lasers powerful enough you will get fast-fast-fast relief!

Also we can use electromagnetics to shield passengers--at a cost of mass.
