Re: FEWER CATEGORIES?

We should have one forum for tech related stuff and one forum for everything else. And maybe a subforum for Jaeger so he keeps his conspiracy nonsense off the other forums. That should be enough.

I think what we have is pretty close to what you want.

Not really. I say instead of a separate forum for news and politics, just create a general forum for all non-tech stuff. Give James his crackpot forum, and get rid of the introduction forum.

Bring back Alternate World Views, get rid of the Lobby, and try to convince James to respect our categories?

I am skeptical.

Re: FEWER CATEGORIES?

Here is my refined suggestion from earlier (not an offical motion, just spitballing):

Remove Lobby
Add Science and Technology
[Subtitle: Hard science of today]
Rename MindX to Futurism
[Subtitle: Speculative topics about the future of Science and Technology, as well as their potential impact on society]
Add Off Topic
[Subtitle: Politics, Alternate World Views, and everything else]

Science and Technology for hard science of today, Futurism for speculative topics, and off topic for everything else. Science and Tech would be mostly apolitical as it is about hard science of the day, futurism would be science/tech with some politics (UBI, radical abundance, technological unemployment etc) and off topic would be a catch-all for politics, conspiracy theories, etc.

So my suggestion would mean we'd end up with:

Science and Technology
Futurism
Off Topic
Foundation & Bureaucracy

Actually, I thought it over again, I think it's a good idea to have a news and politics forum. But I think there should be a general forum or "lounge" where people can just discuss any topic they wish, except nutzoid Jaeger stuff. And yes, Spiko, if Jaeger can't follow the rules and keep his psychobabel where it belongs, he should be banned.

The lobby is one of those things that does not seem important but actually is. People have an instinctive need to introduce themselves and be formally received. It is the difference between saying, "Order when ready?" and, "Welcome to Jack in the Box. Can I take your order please?" We may suppose we are too cool for that sort of social convention, but actually we are not.

That just is not what we are about. Our forum is set up so that everyone belongs. If James posts in the wrong forum, it is the job of our eight moderators to move his threads where they belong. If they don't care enough to move them, so be it.

I think this new version of the Forum is great. Now I don't have to think before posting anything... emoticon

Other than well-done, I would suggest these minor change: Merge the Foundation & Bureaucracy into Lobby and arrange resulting 4 categories in this order, with these sub-titles:

LOBBY
Introductions, Administration

MIND-X
Science & Technology Only

NEWS FLASH!
Current Events & Politics

NETHERWORLD
Off-world but Not Illegal

James, the Lobby is where we greet new people. The Bureau is where we make sausage. When someone enters a restaurant to be seated, you do not take them through the kitchen.

You may note that the Foundation & Bureaucracy is hidden from view except to logged in members. There is a reason for that. This particular thread is a perfect example. It is a valid exercise in democratic principles, but it is also dirty laundry. One does not hang out one's dirty laundry.

The Netherworld section is also hidden from non-member view. These two sections are absolutely essential, but they need to be kept in the background.
