Second, except I don't see any reason to ditch the Steemit sub forum. It seems to be resting comfortably.

You cannot second your own motion. Note: I cannot make a motion, second or vote. I was merely formalizing your motion.

You did not include Steemit in the 5 subforums you described. Do you want 6 subforums instead?

Re: FEWER CATEGORIES?

I will assume you wish to move the following:

Motion: that the existing 10 subforums be combined into 6 subforums. The new subforums will be called:

NewsFlash!
newsy stuff and politics

MindX
main forum

The previously created Steemit subforum will be regenerated between the MindX and Lobby subforums when it has been prepared.

Lobby
for introductions

Foundation & Bureaucracy
administrative stuff

Netherworld
sex and other off-color topics

The 24 Hour News Cycle subforum will be renamed NewsFlash!

The Tomorrowland and Shambhala topics will be moved into the Technophilia subforum and that subforum will be renamed MindX

The Foundation topics will be moved into the Bureau subforum and that subforum will be renamed Foundation & Bureaucracy.

The Alternate World Views topics will be moved into the Netherworld subforum.

The 6 subforums will be reordered as shown.

If there is no objection, that is Red's motion. Is there a second?

Very well, then. The vote concludes at 5:32 PM 4/24/2018 forum time (New York time).

I will put a notice in the forum's banner.

Re: FEWER CATEGORIES?

OK, it is all official.

Now, I will express my objections to these changes.

First and foremost, I object to using the name "MindX". It is too reminiscent of the KAI site, and it is arguably plagiarism. I doubt they would call us on it, but they possibly could. The subtitle "main forum" creates the impression that all topics are welcome, when the emphasis should be on science and futurism.

The Netherworld section is not for "sex and other off-color topics". It is for topics that are or have become toxic. It is a way of pushing topics out of view without banning them. The use of the term "sex" will create the wrong impression and attract the wrong audience. It is possibly a violation of site rules.

The title Foundation & Bureaucracy is superfluous. It should just be Bureau.

All in all, these changes are hurried and ill-considered. They do not respect those who discussed and voted on the forum layout when it was proposed. Changes like this can and should be made gradually and closely analyzed. Note that it will be quite a bit of work moving topics around and we will not want to make such drastic changes many times.

We don't have that many active members, most of whom are moderators. It's more representative of the membership than asking for opinions at old dead KAI.

The forum labels and subtitles were just suggestions. I think we should use MindX. If they complain, we'll change it. The inspiration for this site was MindX, so it's appropriate.

I view Netherworld as for material that some or most would view as inappropriate. I think sex and gross stuff belong there. The toxicity of KAI was the result of poor moderation that allowed Left posters to attack those that presented other views.

Foundation & Bureaucracy sounds fine to me and describes what it is. Change to just "Bureau" is fine with me tho.

Alternate World Views should be moved into the MindX forum. We've discussed this before -- Alternate World Views are unfairly labeled 'crack-pot' and could be something like saying CAGW is wrong.

I count two "yes" votes. I think the rules are if there is one more yes vote, and no opposing vote, the resolution carries. Correct?

That sentence highlights my real objection. You have not carefully thought this out.

If we are going to revise the forum, we want to get it right. We want to be deliberative and contemplative. We do not want to keep changing the forum forever like French fashion trends.

I think we should combine two subforums and find a suitable name that everyone can live with. Then, we should think about it for a while.

The rules say that we must wait 24 hours from when the vote was initiated. Then we count the votes. 3 moderators must vote in the affirmative for the vote to be valid. 3/4 of the vote must be in the affirmative for the measure to pass.

quote:

16. Moderator Votes: In all moderator votes, an unambiguous motion must be stated in the Bureau subforum with at least the first sentence in the forum’s “BIG” font in the form “Motion: that…” For example:

Motion: that one new subforum be added between Shambhala and 24-Hour News Cycle called Steemit.

Then, a vote must be called for and seconded. The vote can be called for or seconded, but not both, by the same moderator who posted the motion. (Some specific votes require an additional third.) The motion, the call for a vote, and the second can be made anywhere in the same thread, but it must be clear which motion is being referred to when a vote is called for and seconded. Once a vote has been called for and seconded, it will be initiated. No other motions can be made in that thread, except to extend voting time, until the vote has concluded. When a vote has been appropriately initiated, the vote will conclude 24 hours later. A vote can be extended exactly 12 hours if a moderator declares, “I call for a 12 hour vote extension.” Each moderator is entitled to only one call for a 12 hour vote extension on a specific motion. Votes can be changed one time, either reversed or retracted, while voting is still in progress. Forum administration will determine, possibly retroactively, when the voting period has expired. All moderator votes require at least 3 affirmative votes to be valid. By the end of the voting period, moderators must vote with an unambiguous “yea” or “nay”. Voting will not be done with the forum’s voting mechanism. When there is a tie, the decision will be made by forum administration.

quote:

19. Forum Modification: Anything about the forum can be changed (where feasible) if 3/4 of the moderators agree to exact changes. Forum Administration will not undertake heroic measures to make expensive or technically difficult changes. Administration may make minor edits to the forum to increase consistency or clarity after posting their intent in the Bureau section and waiting 24 hours for members and moderators to make objections. If any moderators object, the issue must be handled in the official manner.

One of the reasons why I want to make Lucid into a moderator is that he actually read the rules.

One, I was born in Chicago so I should get to vote twice.

Two - lucid would be great. I disagree with him regularly and he earns his username. I have noted his lucidity to him.

So yeah, try to get him.
