I think alot of people are ruined for writing, in general. Social justice issues are just what some people's minds think about, first and foremost. They couldn't eat a bowl of cereal without formulating some soapbox race narrative.

The Picard showrunner had said in an interview:
quote:

"He’s seen first-hand fans’ reactions to his show, both the good and bad. Chabon acknowledged that Star Trek fandom has a history of reacting poorly to new iterations of Trek, and admitted to Variety that there were elements of Picard that would test boundaries for some fans. “Sometimes,” he said, “you’re motivated to have things simply because it’s possibly going to piss off or provoke people who seem to have missed the memo about just what exactly Star Trek is and always has been all about.”

and
quote:

Chabon says that for some fans, watching a new version of an old franchise they love can feel like a series of slaps in the face — even if they like the new story.
"It still reminds you that you don't own it, that it's owned by a big corporation, and that ultimately, you have no power over it whatsoever ... [which] can feed a sense of resentment or anger," he adds. "I think I just created that shrine {of posters, knickknacks in his office} there as a way of reminding myself that first, last and always, I am a fan. I want to stay a fan."

THe media will "signal boost" as Lucid would say, some negative fan reactions to such-and-such social issues, and in turn, I think the writers in these shows turn up the volume to hamfisted and spiteful levels, in response.

And it just takes the fun out of it.

It was very interesting to see that Ben has been as much of a lifelong Sci-Fi fan as I - and what Orson said about Sci-Fi authors fleeing to fantasy makes sense now that I hear it.

I too have tracked the obvious trend of Feminizing Sci Fi, and I simply stuck with older ones and the fewer new ones that were not on any Hugo or Nebula compilation.

Luckily for me, rereading lots of the stuff I read years before is enjoyable to me.
