Re: Neuroscience Could Bring Us Eternal Bliss, But Is That a Good Thing?
Spike,
Very good article. I was very pleased to see that insert from "Singularity Hub" where those who chose to vote were in the minority on "wire me up" and a slight majority of "no to yes" on that. And a bigger majority on "to early to say."
It's a treacherous trap to stumble into. For the depressed, a godsend I'm sure, so this is a great advance.
I saw a similar thing where - at the rat level of research - they can avoid physical brain penetration, and instead use deep brain stimulation using targeted ultrasound.
In the article I'm thinking of the "play complex" is hit, and the impulse "to seek," to be alive and emerge from the depths of withdrawal takes place. Very encouraging that they will be able to do it "just enough" to help the depressed.
But that is research, and the article discusses possible "wireheading" for real, essentially. So - when we get there?
I think that at first just some, and rapidly very many will turn up the juice by telling the AI in charge to hit all channels available and max the bliss if possible.
Some of us will resist, and a majority over time will be plugged in and zoned out. This will be a dramatic "sort."
