Whatever gets the bodies up there, as long as its from the Western World at least to a big degree, I am happy.

Dropping a series of gold slugs each weighing a ton into a target spot in a US or Australian desert - or by a Chinese operation on top of their "restive" western-most Muslim majority (for now - see Tibet for clarity) province - whoever brings megatons of gold, or platinum down to earth....

brings the commodity cost of whichever metal it is, crashing down as well.

Handy for making lots of stuff - the cost of some devices drops, which is nice. Still - the gold, platinum, whatever market there is that is impacted by the huge increase in that metal - that market craters.

Instead of that kind of chaos, a consortium like DeBeers had for a long time and may still have, that keeps diamond costs high, may be put in place.

The goal would be to allow some of this or that metal to come down allocated for this or that specific purpose. Chips, catalytic converters, whatever.

AI would be a big help in managing something like that.

We certainly might do something like that, motivated by a desire to minimize worldwide economic turmoil.

If we do that, then most of the Space-processed metals would be used in orbit, or Moonside, or over there toward Mars or Venus.

Lots and lots to do up there. Massive energy generating facilities! Heavily shielded giant O'Neil colonies, for goodness sakes! So much to do!

That's what it's all about. Maybe we will have to build special landing craft just for bringing precious minerals back down. All they have to do is get down. We can do it!

Mostly, these materials will be used in situ and in orbit, but we will certainly bring some of them down.

Ocean path landing using gliders built in space by robots. Rich. There's you UBI right there.

All it will take is a heat shield, a shell, and a parachute. We're not bringing down livestock, just raw minerals.

Actually, it won't even require a parachute. How much could raw minerals be damaged by hitting the ocean at terminal velocity?

All they need is a spherical heat shield and extra space for air so that they float.

Actually, they won't contain any air. Space is full of the lightest thing in the universe: vacuum.

They can be filled with mostly vacuum (clear) and priceless minerals (blue).

I like it when a plan comes together. We mine the sky, not for national glory, nor, because it is hard, nor, because it might bring peace to the the world. We mine the sky, because it will conceivably make everyone rich, rich RICH!

Good concepts Spike!

Multiple types of asteroids have been identified but the three main types would include the C-type, S-type, and M-type asteroids:

C-type asteroids have a high abundance of water which is not currently of use for mining but could be used in an exploration effort beyond the asteroid. Mission costs could be reduced by using the available water from the asteroid. C-type asteroids also have a lot of organic carbon, phosphorus, and other key ingredients for fertilizer which could be used to grow food.[23]
S-type asteroids carry little water but look more attractive because they contain numerous metals including: nickel, cobalt and more valuable metals such as gold, platinum and rhodium. A small 10-meter S-type asteroid contains about 650,000 kg (1,433,000 lb) of metal with 50 kg (110 lb) in the form of rare metals like platinum and gold.[23]
M-type asteroids are rare but contain up to 10 times more metal than S-types[

Whoa! 110 pounds of platinum and gold would buy a lot of time in the holodeck!

Or, a down payment on a City in a Box. Take New York (please!) and build 5 levels above it, and have the Sandhogs dig 3 levels below. Each level could have its own farms and tropical rain forests, ski mountains, and lakes.

I'd prefer it to be powered by fusion power, but the actual building could be done with enough solar cash. Building might be best with grapheme-concrete.
