Using chitin, a bioinspired material, to manufacture tools and shelters on Mars

Image
A simple manufacturing technology based on chitin, one of the most ubiquitous organic polymers on Earth, could be used to build tools and shelters on Mars, according to a study published September 16 in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Javier Fernandez of Singapore University of Technology and Design, and colleagues.

Why not on Earth, not that we don't already have good building materials and such? Probably marketability? But when? When does it become technically doable to fly back and forth to Mars, let alone, build stations?

Good point about why not on Earth, Spud.

The experimental housing issue was being discussed by Scott Adams, before the mass shut-down, praising some rich dude who committed to improving a poor section of some poor City. He suggested new kinds of housing for that. He then praised Kanye for building some "poor folk housing," even though the city he was in made him take it down, due to some standards they insist on.

Scott is really enthusiastic about new housing ideas. He's not alone, as we know from printable housing that has been posted here on EV several times.

If this material is cheap yet great - then great!

The person or group behind it needs to find someone who can put them with some experimental housing folks.

Right, Doc! Why hold everything in abeyance, till we fly to Mars. The Donald mentioned that very briefly tonight. You'll never find a dem who is pro-space, I would say?

Cheaper housing and all that is a wonderful idea! Scott likes Molten Salt Reactors, for say Thorium, but I do need more info to see if they are safe and affordable enough? I'd also match any progress in solar power as proviso.

My thinking was do clear cutting of forest tracks in Cal and Aus, and then, since they are all solar nuts, use the bare land area (since it has nothing to burn on it) to be like the proposal for placing photovoltaic arrays above farmlands to double use the land area? With Cal + Aus, don't plant below the solar arrays and leave it bare as a babies ass, to ensure sparks make no more firestorms.

Aren't ya glad I am in charge? ;-D

The solar dream lives in many, and I bought into it due to RayK predicting that it would be our future energy source.

Meanwhile, reality right now has us using the same sources as the last many decades, with some important changes for us, but overall, the same mix of sources.

Nuke, Oil, Coal, Nat Gas.

Nuke has gotten much better. Amazingly so. And new types are under construction here and in other countries, thank goodness.

Nat Gas has changed place with Coal.

That's it. Solar is down there with Hydro. Both great, but only overtaking Hydro due to much investment that is supported by Govs all over the world.

Meanwhile, Hydro is now evil to lefty environmentalists. They want to tear down the "Damn Dams," which are now evil as they interrupt the lives of fish. No joke or exaggeration there!

I share your hope for solar - but for now, its still "back in the pack."
