The coal miner uncle, was the usual politician tactic of trying to relate to working-class people struggling in harsh, health-risking jobs..
kinda like trying to relate to people living in the inner-city, by saying your uncle lived in poverty in the local housing project, and then people find out that he just owned a bunch of rental property in the neighborhood, and lived in relative comfort in a pleasant part of town.
Even if you honestly thought your uncle was poor and living in the housing project, you obviously didn't witness any of his struggling..
