Faculty & Staff of Color Coffee Hour My school has started holding something called the Faculty & Staff of Color Coffee Hour. These coffee hours are held on school premises and paid for by taxpayers. The monthly invites, now for Zoom, make it clear that white people need not apply. In order to join their group one must appear in person at their on-campus headquarters...ostensibly so that they can verify one's eligibility (non-whiteness).
Would a whites-only Coffee Hour be kosher to you, Lucid?
It's a sticky issue. How much it bothers me comes down to how genuine I think that the motives are, and that is entirely situational. If it comes from a genuine place then I'd be fine with it, but if I'm honest I'd probably be less likely to give such a group the benefit of the doubt. I would want both to be legally protected however.
add: among the faculty of an educational institution?
Anything officially sanctioned by the institution would bother me, assuming it's receiving public funds. To be clear, it would (and does) bother me in that case whether it's POC group or a whites only group.
Re: Faculty & Staff of Color Coffee Hour I should add that the reason why I know about these meetings is that they regularly send out all-campus emails reminding qualified persons that their meetings are being held. I couldn't ignore them if I tried.
Re: Faculty & Staff of Color Coffee Hour I've mentioned it before, but we were called to the auditorium for a presentation about college prep / transition programs.. Then told, it was for people of color right at the end of it.. A white girl, had the nerve to ask (raising her hand) why it wouldn't be for all colors.. The guy said it was to help with low black attendance.. (even though poc includes everyone who isn't white)
She walked out, and was suspended.
THere were only a handful of white students in the auditorium to begin with, btw.
