CREEPY EMAIL ACCOUNTS

Has anyone noticed how creepy free email services have become over the past several years?

"Welcome to a list of free email services that do not ask for your phone number. Yep, it’s creepy these days. You need to give away your phone number in exchange for an email account. I mean, while it does add a layer of security for the company, giving the phone number away basically does nothing good for us. So here is a list of good companies who respects our privacy, and provide free email services without asking for phone numbers."

Any comments or suggestions?

I just use gmail. Never had a problem.

They have your cell phone. But I supposed that's no problem either. Keep moving ... nothing to see...

Sure, but I don't really see the point in hiding your cell phone number from them. Google already has so much information about you that it seems like a waste of time to try and avoid giving them more. Cell phone numbers are a fantastic way to secure an account, which is part of the reason why so many services ask for it. It is hard for a chinese hacker to get into your information when they need physical access to your cell phone for verification. I'm *far* more worried about hackers getting into my email account than Google knowing my cell phone number.

I've heard good things about protonmail. Haven't used it myself however.

I don't use cell phones and they don't accept land lines phones. THAT is very fishy.

A cell phone is 10 digits. I don't see how adding these 10 digits is any better than creating an alpha-numeric-symbolic passcode. YHfh43&55$%gjd is more secure than any 10 digit cell phone number. So the security thing is a ruse. They want to be able to track everyone by GPS. That's the only possible reason for insisting on cell phone numbers. If you don't see this as creepy I don't know what to say except L. Ron Hubbard would label you as "reasonable."

What's so valuable or personal about an email account. All that's in an email account is blah, blah, blah. All human beings blah, blah, blah about the exact same things. Hubbard calls it "itsa." Know what I mean?

Well if you don't have a cell phone then I can definitely understand why you'd want to avoid services that require it. The reason they don't allow land lines is because they have to be able to send text message verification codes.

You misunderstand the purpose of the cell phone numbers in terms of internet security. When you enter your cell phone number then the services can send a verification code to your phone that only you can receive (because only you have your phone). The number isn't the secure part, the secure part is that you're the only one that can receive messages to that number. If a hacker figures out your password and accesses your account, google can flag it for additional verification (because it logged in from a foreign country, from an IP known to be used by hackers, etc). If those hackers don't have physical access to your cell phone, then they cannot access the account even with the password.

Uh, quite a lot? Business documents, personal information that can be used for fraud, etc. There is quite a lot that is "valuable" to someone with ill intentions.

Listen to what you are saying. Only I have my phone. What about the guy who now has my phone because I accidentally left it on a park bench.

I am sorry, there is no legitimate reason an email company needs to have a phone company's ID information other than for illegal surveillance purposes. Strong passwords are quite sufficient.

The guy in real life who randomly picked up your phone and also knows what accounts you use online and can get past the first layers of protection (username/password) in order to get to the second stage of verification? Not impossible, but not plausible either.

You do not understand internet security, and you seem unwilling to learn so I'll stop trying to explain it to you. Do whatever you want.

The "security" state is full of !@#$. It's a bunch of people extorting the tech-ignorant public with fear exactly as the state does to "justify" its existence. The security state and crap like cell phone IDs is nothing less than a protection racket. Make the environment seem dangerous so you can sell "security" and "protection."

If this is what "internet security" is all about, yes I am quite unwilling to learn. I am unwilling to be indoctrinated into this mentality.
