It's one small step from running over a pedestrian to the Terminator.

Red,

The terminator? Thats further along in the timeline. Thats after:

"...you idiots! You blew it all up!" - with apologies to Chuck Heston.

This is way too soon into the intro to AI into our lives.

So far, an Uber test run has killed a middle aged woman who was "jaywalking." She was violating the cars' space. She was an adult who had ignored the rules of the road, and was outside of the crosswalk.

So, as we who traffic in two futury tech oriented sites consider this, just who will be enforcing such traffic rules in our more and more AI near future?

And thats foot traffic, crosswalk rules too, mind.

Yes...it will be AI driven cop cars -

"While patent filings don’t always translate to the real world (looking at you, Amazon Atlantis), this one seems almost inevitable–at least to anyone who has watched Black Mirror.

If the cars do become a reality, let’s see if they fare better than Silicon Valley’s police robot."

Those Tempe cops pull no punches! I hope they at least let the family sit down before they opined.

But, since the door is open...

Do the Tempe cops submit the application to the Darwin Awards peeps, or does the coroner?

Re: uber driverless halted after fatality

I am not sure what to make of this news. Whenever I see a ‘driverless’ car it always has a human in the driving seat, hands ready to snatch hold of the steering wheel and take control of the car should the need arise. From what I can tell, this was the case here.

I am therefore inclined to suppose that the woman who was killed must have appeared so suddenly that nobody and nothing could have reacted quickly enough to avoid the accident. Autonomous vehicles may one day have driver skills and responses way superior to humans but nevertheless cars will remain physical objects that require a certain amount of time to come to a halt, that will skid should they encounter black ice and so on. Frankly, demanding infallibility from any driver is asking too much because there will always be incidents where accidents are unavoidable.

It could be that the victim was not to blame and that the person overseeing the driverless car was negligent. We will have to wait and see whether the victim died of stupidity on her behalf or negligence on behalf of the supervisor.

A news update says that the car was speeding. It did not say whether it was speeding on auto or whether the human was in control at this point, but either way it seems less likely that the pedestrian was at fault.

I've seen a couple of vid clips on KAI. It seems clear that the car should have detected her.

The safety driver is caught in the video and was not paying attention.

He is spacing out staring into his lap. He then glances up, has a startled look, then *crash*

If the lady has any descendants, I'm sure they can get a lawyer who would probably take this on spec even though the cops say it wasn't the cars fault.

If the lawyer could get a jury trial, the company would probably settle.

Would it ever be the car’s fault? I reckon that, depending on where the evidence points, the law would place the blame on the pedestrian, the safety driver or the company that provided the tech, but the car itself would never be held responsible. Or does anyone think that will change if AI becomes intelligent enough?

"The car at fault."

Morally at fault, no.

My sci fi orientation is all ready to consider the AI as an agent who may hold guilt.

But no, of course we aren't there yet. My toaster is not guilty if it burns my toast.

You are right. The AI brain of this car may be dissected like the head of a rabid dog that bites someone - but it won't be blamed.
