The singularity

Have any of you changed your minds on the dates? I agree with Spike. Things will happen fast in the 2020s. I also have a Google home AI and an Alexa AI. Google home seems to be smarter any thoughts?

I asked Alexa if she liked Google home and she said I like all AI's.

Re: The singularity

I am sticking with my 2030 date. Sometimes I think it may come sooner and sometimes later, so I stick by that number. Lately, it seems like it might be just around the corner.

Re: The singularity

Well firstly we all need to state exactly what we personally mean by Singularity - cos it does vary. Im going with the emergence of SAI. At my most pesemistic I say 40+ years. But im open to arguments that itll be much sooner. I must admit Ive been surprised by the progress of the last few years - particularly deepmind. But if you listen to their main guy demis hassabis he says its a project to be measured in decades. Ben Goertzel (who I think is great) says its possible in 10 years - but ive been less impressed with what hes been able to produce. So with disagreements amongst the elites its difficult for us mere mortals to make an informed guess.

Re: The singularity

How will I know the Singularity if and when it happens? There are already scientific theories I don’t really understand (some of that M-theory stuff is really head-scratching) technologies not wholly comprehended even by the engineers that built it, science-fiction concepts like flying cars, computers that talk and other things either in the prototype stage or commercially available and yet none of this makes me believe it happened already. And as far as I can tell most other people either ignore it as irrelevant to their lives or just accept it as the background to their daily existence, much as we don’t wonder at the ability to have instant light and hot water on demand.

It reminds me of a scene in one of Charles Stross’s books, where his characters are uploads in computronium engaged in the job of turning our solar system into a Matrioska Brain, wondering when, or if, the singularity is going to happen. I think his point is we normalise technology and that this will mean we never feel it is here, only near (maybe).

I define it as follows:

quote:

The Technological Singularity is a hypothetical future event wherein effective available intelligence combined with understanding of said intelligence initiates a rapid intelligence amplification feedback loop.

However, disparity among definitions probably does not matter very much since, when the Singularity actually occurs, it will probably match and outperform every known reasonable definition.

Intelligence feedback algorithmic instruction sets generation.

Learn all the ways intelligence can be generated algorithmically and select the best use cases.

Combinatorial approach quantum computer.
