Doubtful. Hillary won the popular vote despite a lot of Democrats intensely disliking her. I really don't see Hickenlooper creating that kind of discord within the party. I think the pro-Hickenlooper crowd plus the anti-Trump crowd would result in a decent turnout.
I think a further left candidate would result in more enthusiasm among young Democrats, but they don't make up a huge portion of the Dem vote anyway. I think the gains from centrists and even people on the Right who are sick of Trump would outweigh the loss of enthusiasm.

The problem with the Dems is they don't have a viable ideology. More taxes and bigger government killed the Soviet Union yet this seems to be the Dems mods operandi.
As far as policy and platform: the Dems really missed the boat on NAFTA and free trade -- which destroyed half their voters. Hello! 50,000 factories gone! I mean, where are the workers? They're on the bottle now. If the Dems had given a !@#$ about their workers, their people, they would be where Trump is today. Trump simply grabbed this OBVIOUS, no-brainer issue -- one that even I, a non-politician, was talking about for decades in my films -- and won the election.
The Dems will have to do something wise and viable ... not stupid and revengeful.
I don't yet know exactly what that could be but one thing for certain is they need to get rid of Nancy as she's gone senile -- as has Joe. These poster boys for the Dems -- and a dash of ancient Bernie -- make the Dems look the perfect party for senior care residents who still smoke pot.
Another problem with the Dems and why they blew it is the Democratic Party is like a miniature Soviet Union. Having just re-read the "Communist Manifesto" by Karl Marx, the Dems are failing for the same reason Communism failed.
The original Communists were idealists and I have no doubt their intentions were GOOD -- to build a worker's paradise where all were economically satisfied and treated equally. Great goal. Problem is the people that had to Administer the Paradise went corrupt and started !@#$ everyone, literally and figuratively.
This is exactly what happened with NAFTA and Free Trade Paradise. The Dems administering NAFTA and the Free Trade Paradise (think Clintons) also went corrupt and started !@#$ over their workers with 30 years of neglect. In other words, the workers from 50,000 factories -- the Democratic proletariat -- were fucked by the corporate fascists -- Clinton bourgeoisie.
Trump, observing the obvious, walks away with the election. The Dems are still crying about their own stupidity rather than figuring out an ideology and platform that will work. So here's a hint: the only ideology and platform that will work is a return to strict original intent Constitutional principles.
All else has been tried. And there is a niche here for the Dems because even Trump does not apply about 25% of the Constitutional principles correctly.
