Re: What are we escaping from ?

To me, the term 'escape velocity' does not imply any event/ desire in which we run away from something, but rather an event/ expectation in which there is a radical change from the past.

For most of human history, the law 'what goes up must come down' held true. Anyone could have demonstrated this by attempting to hurl an object skywards only for gravity to inevitably slow down its progress and cause it to fall back to earth. But then, around the 1950s, we managed to hurl things with such force escape velocity was achieved. And then it was no longer the case that things going up have to come down. We entered a whole new era.

If advances in robotics and artificial intelligence keep occurring and accumulating, we will bring about another kind of 'escape velocity' transition to a whole new era, one in which we share existence with a new kind of alien intelligence. It may be one more powerful than our own and hopefully complementary to ours rather than an outright competitor. That, too, would bring about a new world in which old understandings are invalid, hence the term 'escape velocity'.

Actually Doc there is something to escape from. Everything illogical and irrational about human beliefs. Let's shoot past the ignorance of our ancestors uneducated methods of interpretating the nature of reality and embrace the exponential excelleration of evidence based conclusions. Let's escape the ignorance and irrationality of supernatural desires. The feel good justifications for eternal existence beliefs. Let's embrace the strentgh of rational thought. Let's shake the bonds of psychological survival tactics that are motivated by instinct rather then the love of truth. Beliefs rooted in feel good rather than knowledge actual. If there is a tipping point for humans and their historical position in the evolution of intelligence it is that point which chisels out the slot where feelings are cordoned off from intellect. Finally set as subservient. Having a place but not associated to rational prediction. As an intellectually evolving species, we must escape from the emotional pressures that would interfere with our intellectual growth. Only in this way can we truly fine tune our intelligence advancement and achieve an escape velocity. An escape from irrational beliefs that would chain us and doom us.

In the event you have nothing to escape from, there remains possibilities of escaping to.
There might not be any 'escape' from the or one of the universe(s) most powerful forces (EVOLUTION) but one might escape one environment for another, by changing that environment or replacing that environment or by changing the adaption to one or more environments.

Extro and Gawell, you both note either escaping to or evolving to something new.

We all show as we grow older that in character and mind we evolve to fit our lives, as our brains adapt to fit our use of it.

Of course this will continue as we test how we can poke it and zap it to pep it up.
