Re: Brexit May faces backlash over compromise It looks to me like May is living her "remain" dream as she dreamily stretches out the Brexit negotiations into her bizarre "Chequers" deal.
That, as far as I know, is still her plan. It stinks as far a Brexit voters voted for Brexit, not a compromise kinda-Brexit kinda-remain, which is what Chequers is.
May wants to stay PM, but for a short time now, she finally has in Buoyant Boris a credible Conservative Party oppeonent for her job.
The article noted some of Mays' opponents, but did left out one of her strongest. A fellow named Mogg:
"Theresa May lacks 'enthusiasm' for Brexit and her plans for a customs partnership are 'completely cretinous', says Jacob Rees-Mogg"
Re: Brexit May faces backlash over compromise Spud,
"...she is playing a game, hoping to exhaust British nationals."
I have gotten that impression. Our Dems and some Repubs made the same effort all through the Cold War, to get us to accommodate to the USSR.
There was huge opposition to Reagan using the phrase "Evil Empire" in a big speech.
Now of course, those bureaucracies have become Deep State autonomous bodies pushing for control in various ways.
Over there I think it has long been worse, and now they are like our Resisty Repubs combined with Dems - the Conservative Party PM, May, essentially openly planning to violate the terms Pat described.
Good thing lots of Conservative MPs and one of her cabinet - now ex - Boris - have taken heart and risen up agin her.
Re: Brexit May faces backlash over compromise I think they may get a public reaction when she does. Let's hope, without being hooked on optimism as a drug.
Re: Brexit May faces backlash over compromise The public has less of a chance to see or hear the reaction with opinion ever-more under control under PM May.
But they have been reacting. PM May has been dragging this our ever since she ran for her job promising to support the Brexit decision.
Her most popular Conservative MP opponent, Mogg, for most of that time, right up until very recently, was not openly opposing her, just making more and more popular opposign arguemnts.
Only after the Chequers confrontation with her inner circle did Boris quit, and roughly at that time popular YouTuber "Sargon of Akkad" very publicly joined Ukip, helping it push a rise of popularity as more and more Brits realise what May is doing.
Things are definitely coming to a boil over there,
Re: Brexit May faces backlash over compromise I think a Brexit will be terrible for Britain, but I think the British leaders should respect the will of the people and get it over with. Might as well give it a chance and see what happens. If it turns into a huge boondoggle, I imagine they could hold another vote down the line and re-join the EU.
--- Account closed permanently. I won't stand for abuse of authority by forum administration to censor criticism of a conservative radio host that celebrated the death of AIDS patients on his show. Maybe some day we'll speak again elsewhere.
Re: Brexit May faces backlash over compromise For EU fans, we have the rest of the EU sucking money out of the UK and giving back zero. The EU was set up in opposition to the USA, and they envisioned themselves as the "Challenging Superpower," with China being a distant 3rd. This has not happened! Plus, there is a solid tyrannical nature to Euro socialists (as they are elsewhere) and this tendency has never been contained.
Britain, by harnessing its technical prowess, can out-compete the inflexible EU punks.
Re: Brexit May faces backlash over compromise "...Brexit will be terrible for Britain."
Och, aye, fears aplenty were stoked with lies aplenty. This was revealed as "Project Fear" was reported on in the months after the surprising Brexit result.
The "Rmainers" over there were like our combined team of media, Dems, lots of big Corps and academia that played such games with reality during the last Presidential contest.
Over there, it was to repeat any BS story about how Brexit would make the economy crumble - immediately the very next day after the vote. Insta-tragedy. All over media and in-person speeches. A top "Remainer makes his "fear" pitch to voters - "its not project fear - its project reality!" -
Then - it happens! Brexit wins! But - no disaster. Instead, periodic arguments about this or that being lower or worse because of Brexit. But - but - what of reality? And nobody ever hears this caveat - "you should doubt me, of course, since I said the sky would fall if we Brexited. And of course, it didn't."
Now we just get a glimmer of that old "Fear campaign." And few bother to argue it when it very seldom any more comes up. If they do, it goes something like I just said.
The fact is, there is so much promise in GB, so many who want to do trade deals with them.
#1, of course, is us. But so many more!
No, fear is not the cause of delay. May is. Her and the remaining Remainers in the Conservative Party.
Soon we find things out...about the hearts of the Conservo Party MPs - are they stout? We shall see!
