Re: On the Proliferation of Artificial Intelligence
I think that, in the long term, the benefits absolutely outweigh the risks.
If we develop artificial intelligence, there is the chance of something bad happening as a result. I do not know how likely it is that something bad will happen or how dire such negative consequences could be, but I do know that it is only a possibility that we will regret the development of AI.
I can speak with certainty when it comes to the consequences of not developing AI, however. It will mean the extinction of the human race. The survival of any species entails identifying and implementing solutions to problems. All species, and humans are no exception, have a limited ability to identify problems and do something about them and it just seems obvious to me that if we live long anough we will encounter an existential problem that we are not competent enough to deal with. Now, I do not know that artificial intelligence would be able to solve such issues but it seems like there is a chance it could. It might think in different ways and therefore come up with solutions we are mentally blind to. It might have powers that open up possibilities closed to us. Artificial intelligence might widen possibility space enough to ensure we continue to exist and evolve. Without it, we guarantee our ultimate demise.

Re: On the Proliferation of Artificial Intelligence
Rather than worry about AI destroying us (which is a possibility) I think a concern which is rarely addressed is the political bias of an AI and whether people are going to accept what it comes up with. You only have to look at the distrust some folk have about computer models of climate change to see that. When an AI comes up with a solution to some problem that doesnt sit well with someones politics thatll cause all kinds of problems. Those damned liberal elitist programmers with their commie code.

Re: On the Proliferation of Artificial Intelligence
So falken, how's the weather in the UK? Growing date palms in Leeds, yet? London being flooded out yet?
"The Climate is Not the Weather!"
Then what is it then, if not the weather?
So, fearless forecasts which fail to predict are what is termed in the computer realm, as GIGO. Garbage-in, Garbage-Out.

Re: On the Proliferation of Artificial Intelligence
My point exactly. AI is going to make you a very unhappy man.

Re: On the Proliferation of Artificial Intelligence
You can't stop progress, and AI is going to happen. The only real questions are who does it first, who does it best and what they use it for.
