It's like something from a 1950's Scifi film; except, of course, that there is no floor.

erm, maybe im being a moron but isnt this design meant to carry a crew of up to 200? That figure always seemed outrageous to me - I know the first mission will be considerably fewer crew - but I dont see where all the passengers fit.

is this sposed to be an accurate to scale diagram?

I suppose it could carry a crew of 200 into orbit. It probably could not house them indefinitely.

im pretty sure it was to get 200 people to mars. with all the supplies food, water (for drinking and washing and laundry) EVERYTHING you need for the journey and to keep them going on mars until the next flight window can resupply.

I note that the passengers have individual sleeping quarters - previously the cabins were described as carrying up to 6 people. So something has changed.

As I study over the design, I can see how it could house 200 people. The cutaway view obscures the actual volume. 200 people in free-fall could comfortably fit into the central compartment, and they would not all be there at once. Some would be sleeping, some would be in the command centers, etc. As Rich often asserts, I could be wrong.

Also just spotted in the text that the number 200 has been replaced with "dozens" of crew. 200 is still technically dozens - but sounds to me like theyre reducing ambition.

Musk is a PR man. He probably dropped the 200 number early to build enthusiasm.

In a mission to Mars, it would make sense to send three of these at once. That way, if one of them failed, the crew could reasonably be evacuated to the other two ships.

[sign in to see URL] been doing a bit of googling. Looks like i may have got this one wrong as it appears the 200-300(!) figure is for sub-orbital travel. i usually check these things before posting but for some reason i misremembered Elon - i was sure id seen it on youtube.
